Genealogy wise, I am most probably still to be regarded as a pure amateur, but that does not matter when You as always can find guidence and assistance from colleagues, especially through DIS-Denmark, where I own profound thanks to amongst others Peer Hagemann, Jørgen Thue Pedersen, Anne Mortensen, Bent Bæhr etc.

My Kuhlen lineage can be traced to the town of Rheydt in North-Rhine-Westphalia, later merged with Wickrat and Mönchengladbach to form todays city of Mönchengladbach.
Historically the lineage can be traced back to late in the

16th century, when they under the name of Jores/Johris takes over "der Herrnhof, Kuhlenhof".

I've been very fortunate as I partly through assistance from the "City Archive of Mönchengladbach" by Gerd Lamers and partly from the brothers Dieter and Volker Kuhlen, gained possession of an extensive genealogy paper:

"Beiträge zur Geschichte des evangelische Geschlecht Kuhlen " made in 1928 to 1933 by Heinrich Müller," Lehrer in Frankfurt am Main "and Wilhelm Niepoth," Rector in Wesel "at the request of Dieter and Volker Kuhlen’s grandfather "Herrn Fabrikbesitzer Heinrich Kuhlen in Rheydt."

If You should be interested in a German language, Word-file, made by Dieter Kuhlen from the original manuscript, it can be download here:

On my father's side the non- Kuhlen lineages go back to “natfolk” (rovers) from Jutland (Beck, Kolli), to the northern part of Sealand (Græsted / Søborg) and to Sweden (Vitaby, Kristianstad län).

On my mothers side there are two main branches: The Hagemann branch originating before 1800 from Sweden and the Hertzberg branch from the northern part of Germany (to the best og my knowledge not in any way related to the circus family Hertzberg). There are also strings leading to Bornholm (Nyker, Rø and Vestermarie), Kalundborg (the shoemaker families Grausen and Zennichsen), to the area around Malmö and to Southern Sealand and Møn.

My wife's family also splits into two main branches: One located around the western part of the Limfjord, especially around the Thisted region and the second part mainly coming from Aalborg. Especially the Ålborg part is of interest as it through the Behr family continues to the Bering family and further to the bourgeoisie of Aalborg
in the 16th century , ie the Thagaard-, the De Hemmer- and the Suhr- family, and from theron further back to ex Skipper Clement.

The whole family can be seen here in the form of WinFamily Web 6.0:    Kuhlen family

Please observe that not all persons currently are fully verified, i.e  a smaller part still remains on "FamilySearch-level".

During my research, I had great use of what I will call my worksheet – Actually an Excel spreadsheet, where I gradually made a “picture” of the whole family – The sheet, as mentioned was gradually expanded by budding, and is therefore not strictly logically structured. Today it has a print size of approximately 0.9 x 2.7 meters (printed on a special printer for technical drawings).

In case other people could find similar benefice from such a worksheet, a links to down load my sheet and a somewhat more organized blank template are found below:
